Summary of Office of General Affairs' Response to the 0403 Earthquake

Despite the challenges posed by the earthquake, the Office of General Affairs has been tirelessly engaged in addressing the aftermath. From April 3rd to April 16th, we have accomplished several significant tasks. These include supporting fire investigations, assessing damages across various units, sanitizing public spaces in administrative and educational buildings, restoring hot water and electricity to the Xiangqing and Qinyue dormitories, fixing water dispensers, coordinating catering services, setting up temporary power supplies, and managing post-disaster waste.

Looking forward, here's what's on our agenda:

  1. Outsourced Equipment Planning and Procurement: We're currently in the process of planning and procuring air conditioning systems for the administrative building, as well as steel frame and ceiling works for teaching and administrative areas. We expect to complete the assessment of air conditioning damage by May 2024, with repairs estimated to take 2-3 months. We're also strategizing the cleanup of post-disaster chemical waste.
  2. Restoration of Water and Electricity: Plans are underway to restore electricity to the College of Arts, with vendors already engaged for necessary repairs after testing. Similarly, repairs for the Jieyun Dormitory water tower, led by our contractor, are set to begin soon.
  3. Building Restoration Planning:
  • College of Science and Engineering I (Building A, B, and C): Repairs are expected to take 3-5 months, covering electrical and engineering aspects. Structural engineers will conduct seismic assessments, with a preliminary report due within two weeks.
  • College of Science and Engineering II: Recent surveys have identified ceiling damage. Material requisition and repair scheduling are underway, though delays from the contracted vendor have led to evaluation by an alternate vendor in Taipei.
  • Library Building: Architectural redesign is imminent to reinforce seismic zones and frames due to the extensive ceiling area.
  • HanXing Dormitories (Building 1 and 2): Emergency repairs Building 2 are scheduled for September this year, with comprehensive refurbishments expected to be completed by June 2025.
  • New Chemistry Building Construction: Construction of the new Chemistry Building is ongoing, with continual reassessment of spatial requirements.

In summary, the Office of General Affairs has tackled post-earthquake challenges with resilience and efficiency, completing crucial tasks to restore normalcy. Moving forward, our proactive approach ensures swift progress in repairs and enhancements, guaranteeing a conducive environment for all.
