Tips for energy conservation and carbon reduction

I.           Energy conservation tips for living areas

1.          Air conditioning units – Electricity conservation and maintenance¡G

Set the temperature between 26 and 28 degrees and use the AC together with an electric fan. By decreasing the temperature by 1¢J the electricity consumption is reduced by 6%.
Properly close doors and windows to keep the cool air in.
The AC air filter should be cleaned once every two weeks. Dirty air filters tend to cause electricity waste.
Based on the level of outdoor air pollution, the manufacturer should be asked to clean the heat sink every one to three years

2.          Lighting electricity conservation¡G

Electricity consumption can be reduced by 30% by utilizing electronic- ballast fluorescent lighting, while power-saving light tubes (bulbs) generate power savings of over 60%. The lighting should be dusted regularly to keep it in a clean condition (at least every six months)
Get into the habit of turning off unnecessary lights
Use either full or partial lighting depending on circumstances

3.          Refrigerator electricity conservation¡G

Place the refrigerator in a well-ventilated location
Keep a distance of at least 10cm from the wall
Avoid opening refrigerator doors if unnecessary
Don’t keep the doors open longer than necessary
Let hot food cool before refrigerating it
Food storage should not exceed 80%
Replace damaged rubber on refrigerator doors

 

II.        Energy conservation tips for classrooms and instruction areas

1.          Electricity conservation in instruction areas¡G

Turn off all lights and the AC after class
Properly close doors and windows to keep the cool air in
Turn off the projector if not in use
Set the temperature between 26 and 28 degrees and use the AC together with an electric fan. By decreasing the temperature by 1
¢J the electricity consumption is reduced by 6%.¡CAdd curtains to windows and doors that are directly exposed to sunlight. Security guards should inspect faculty research facilities and classrooms at night to make sure all lights and the AC are turned off.
Don’t use the elevator to reach the first three floors. By not using the elevator to reach a certain floor the electricity consumption is reduced by 0.0137 kWh and C02 emissions are decreased by 9.042g.
The last student to leave the self-study rooms is responsible for turning off the lights and AC.

 

III.     Energy conservation tips for offices

1.          Selection of air conditioning units¡G

Select units with high energy efficiency ratios and timer and sleep functions. If EER values are raised by 0.1, the power consumption is reduced by 4%. AC capacity (tons)\=Area(Ping)x0.15
Variable frequency air conditioning saves more electricity and provides more comfort

IV.    We’d like to share a little tip for reducing the power consumption of computers which has been promoted by students of National Chiao Tung University so we can  jointly implement energy conservation and carbon reduction policies

  A little tip by Chiao Tung University students which allows power savings of 420NT per computer per month was awarded the first prize

After the computer has been idle for 20mins, it automatically enters sleep mode which leads to power savings of 97.5% or 420NTD per month. Mr. Bo-Ting Chen and other students from the Institute of Display of NCTU have promoted this power-saving tip which only requires a simple configuration of computers to achieve optimal results. The NCTU students beat 28 other teams and won the first prize in the China Life CSR CEO contest. Statistics reveal that if a computer is left on overnight, the wasted electricity could be used to print out 10,000 pages on a printer. This is a startling number which shows that everyone can make a contribution to save our planet.
